PEST IDENTIFICATION

KNOW YOUR PEST

Carpenter Ants
Carpenter ants range in length from 6 mm to 25 mm (0.24 inch to 1 inch). A carpenter ant's body is divided into three segments, with a very slim waist separating the upper body and lower body. Their antennae are bent and in sections. Male and female adults have wings at mating time.
Mice
A mouse is a small rodent that commonly has a pointed snout, small rounded ears, and a scaly tail of body length, and it can range in colour between gray, brown, white, and black.
Rats
Rats are generally larger but slender with pointed heads, large eyes, and prominent, thinly furred ears. They have moderately long legs and long, sharp claws. The bald soles of their narrow hind feet possess fleshy pads whose sizes vary with species.
Earwigs
Earwigs are elongate insects with biting/chewing mouthparts. They range in size from 5 mm to 50 mm. Earwigs are usually uniformly black or brown, but some are striped. Their antennae are moderately long, consisting of 6–15 segments.
Cockroaches
The German cockroach is one of the smallest species of the cockroach. It measures about 1/8 of an inch in length when it hatches and grows to the adult length of a little over half an inch. Adult cockroaches vary in colour from almost black to light brown and have 2 dark almost parallel stripes just behind their heads.
Centipedes
The house centipedes has an abundance of legs that are so close together, they are almost feathery. The body is covered with black and yellow mottling, with a dark line running down the 'spine'. Fifteen pairs of legs appear around the entire body. Each one has light and dark banding. The last pairs of legs on the body are typically the longest. Large compound eyes adorn the head, and males tend to have very long antennae.
Box Elder Bug
Box Elder bugs are a species of true bug. They are usually found on box Elder trees but can become a nuisance when they rest on the sides of homes or buildings for warmth. The adults are about 12.5 millimetres long with dark brown or black colouration, relieved by red wing veins and markings on the abdomen.
Millipedes
Millipedes measure 2.5 to 4 centimeters in length. Their bodies are made up of segments, with 2 pairs of legs on each segment. They come in a variety of colors, but most of the species found inside homes are gray to dark gray, almost black.
Bed Bugs
Bed Bugs are wingless insects and measure about half a centimetre long. They have flat, oval-shaped bodies with 6 legs each. Moreover, they are light brown and may change in colour to dark red after a meal of blood. They also have squat heads, large antennae, and large mouth parts. They are nocturnal parasites and prefer to hide in the seams of a mattress, where food (blood) is readily available.
